Why does it feel like staying on trend is so hard these days? If you stay up to date on Instagram and TikTok, you will see a new trend every week. Today’s teens and young adults, including myself, seem to be fixated on keeping up with trends. It is fun to freshen up your wardrobe every once in a while, but it seems like I have to constantly buy new pieces.
Since social media has become so prevalent in our lives, we constantly see influencers showing off new trends. Social media plays a big role in fashion. Once we see one celebrity wearing something, we all seem to want to wear it. Clothing trends have always come in and out of the fashion world, but now it is happening faster than ever. We have seen the 90s inspired clothes come back, and now we seem to be moving into the early 2000s trends. As long as gaucho pants don’t come back, I am here for the 2000s trends.
However, keeping up with the trends can be problematic because it promotes fast fashion. If you are unfamiliar with the term, fast fashion is inexpensive clothing being produced at rapid rates to keep up with the trends. Why is that a problem? Fast fashion has a large carbon footprint. Creating clothes uses a lot of energy. Some examples of fast fashion stores are Shein or Forever 21. Not to say we shouldn’t shop at these stores, but just to be aware of it. When it comes to fast fashion, just do some research on the pros and cons. I am still learning about the effects of fast fashion.
We all have jumped on the latest trends, and that is okay! I myself just just did some shopping this weekend, and bought trendy pieces. I try to buy pieces that I think will still be on trend for awhile because unlike the influencers, I cannot afford to buy new clothes every week. I also try to combat fast fashion by thrifting. Some of my favorite thrift stores are Goodwill, Avalon Exchange, and Depop which is basically an online thrift store. If like me you are into the trends, I also shop at Zara, Urban Outfitters, and some online stores like Princess Polly. These stores always seem to have the latest trends. That being said, these stores are considered fast fashion, so I try to not shop there too often. Just remember, staying on trend can be fun, but things come and go quickly.
Trying to keep up with Kylie,
Dani
